SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - The 2A DI Region III championship will come down to two teams many counted out at the beginning of the season. San Augustine will play Tenaha Thursday night in Nacogdoches.
Both teams had successfull 2017 seasons with San Augustine making it to the 2A DI Region III State Semi-final. Tenaha made it to state but lost late to Muenster in the 2A DII Championship.
“A lot of people said this would be a rebuilding year for us,” San Augustine Head Coach Marty Murr said. “I didn’t feel that way. I thought we would be here. I knew we had a good team.”
While the schools are in different counties in Deep East Texas, the Tigers and Wolves are more a like than different.
“Kids in these communities are brought up at a young age,” Tenaha Head Coach Greg Jenkins said. “I have a lineman that sat down with me and talked about when he was in the fifth grade he remembered watching Tenaha play Falls City and he could rattle off a lot of the plays and what happened. He is just one of many like this. From a young age that are taught that we win here in these two towns. That winning mentaltiy, I do believe it breeds a lot of succes and it becomes expected and they demand themselves to be up here in the summer and to play 7-on-7. They expect this every year.”
Tenaha arrived to the regional final with a big statement win over state ranked Carlisle. San Augustine is in the finals after a come from behind thriller against Garrison.
“It drives us,” Jaurmez Brock said. “They doubted both teams. We just used it to push ourselves.”
So on Thursday night, while they both want to win, players from Tenaha and San Augustine are ready to go out and have the game of the year and make sure they prove to the doubters they are for real.
