East Texas Ag News: Breeding hogs on the rise in the US

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - The number of hogs kept for breeding here in the US is up by more than three percent compared to last year.

Sow slaughter is also up. Outpacing last year by two percent. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Office in Overton says despite the higher levels for sow slaughter, there is little evidence pointing to contraction in the US hog industry.

The US also imported 13 percent more sows and boars from Canada, compared to last year.

Volumes average about nine-thousand head a week, which is roughly 15 percent of the US sow slaughter per week.
