EAST TEXAS (KLTVKTRE) - Many stockmen in the area are in the midst of stretching their hay supplies.
Local producers need to do their best to estimate when they expect spring forages to become available for grazing.
High quality forages such as alfalfa can be shipped in and can be expensive. Lower quality hay from other sources can be shipped in as well but poor-quality hay will need to be supplemented with a high protein supplement.
Texas A&M Agrilife agents say the most popular option is protein licks or protein tubs.
Regardless of which protein supplement you use keeping animal welfare and future profitability of your cattle operation in the forefront is the most important.
