JASPER, TX (KTRE) - After a Jasper woman allegedly led police on a short car chase on Friday, officers lost sight of her vehicle, and the SUV was found wrecked in a swimming pool two days later.
Dezarae Tyshena Powell, 24, of Jasper, is still being held in the Jasper County Jail on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle, failure to identify as a fugitive, and escape from custody. Collectively, her bond amount has been set at $21,000.
According to a press release, a Jasper PD officer stopped a green Chevrolet Trailblazer for defective equipment at about 11:54 p.m. Friday.
The driver gave the JPD officer a false ID and claimed to be another person to hide the fact that she had an outstanding warrant for misdemeanor theft, the press release stated. However, the officer learned she was actually Powell and put her in hand restraints. The officer also told her that she was under arrest for the warrant and would face an additional charge of failure to identify as a fugitive.
“Powell freed her left hand from the hand restraint and got into the driver’s seat and drove off at a high rate of speed to escape from custody,” the press release stated. “After a short pursuit, officers lost sight of the vehicle.”
On Sunday, the Trailblazer was found wrecked in a residential swimming pool near the intersection of Timberlane and Collier.
“It is believed that when Powell evaded, she lost control attempting to make the turn eastbound onto Collier and went through a residential yard through a wooden fence and wrecked into the pool that had a debris net on top that kept the vehicle from submerging,” the press release stated.
Lt. Garrett Foster with the Jasper Police Department said that JPD officers learned of Powell’s location, and she was arrested at the Econo Lodge hotel a short time after the chase.
