LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -The Lufkin Police Department will be receiving new gear for their SWAT Terrorism Preparedness Program.
City council gave their approval last week. Currently, the Lufkin Police Department SWAT team has a military style helmet used during emergencies.
The new helmets that will be purchased from a $34,000 grant from the Deep East Texas Council of Government will consist of a protective style helmet with radio attachment and headphones.
Lufkin police spokeswoman Jessca Pebsworth explains the benefits.
“We do have headsets that we currently use, but it’s a separate piece of equipment. But it’s not as streamlined into our current radio system as what this new technology system will be,” said Pebsworth.
The Lufkin Police Department is currently in the process of submitting the grant to DETCOG for approval.
