DOUGLASS, TX (KTRE) - Douglass Independent School District has an interim superintendent after the current one took a leave of absence.
The district announced Dr. Walter Peddy’s leave of absence Wednesday in a letter to parents. The duration of the leave is unknown, the district says.
The Board of Trustees has retained Kerry Birdwell as interim superintendent.
Birdwell retired in June 2018 after a career in education. He previously was the superintendent of Alto Independent School District for seven years.
“We are grateful for the willingness of Mr. Birdwell to step in and help Douglass ISD at this time and the Board is confident in his ability to lead our district,” said Bobby Hobson, president of the Board of Trustees, in the letter. “The devotion of our teachers and staff is unwavering and they wish to assure you that this temporary change in leadership will not deter their focus.”
KTRE reached out to district officials for more information on what prompted the move. Hobson said the board will have no further comment.
