LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Volunteers in Lufkin are getting ready to create a more inviting space for children in the foster care system. The volunteers will be painting and cleaning the two visitation rooms at the Lufkin office of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Chasity Boatman is leading the effort to get the rooms painted, cleaned, organized and stocked with new books and toys. The rooms serve as an environment to foster relationships with family members of children who are often the victims of neglect or abuse.
“A lot of the toys were damaged. A lot of the books were damaged and so I had a week-long drive for books and toys at Marco’s Pizza,” she said. “I also created an Amazon wish list for furniture items.”
The effort is part of a partnership between Marco’s Pizza and Bags of Love, and Boatman said they’re still looking for volunteers to help.
“Especially as a community of faith. We’re instructed to specifically and biblically help orphans,” she said. “A lot of churches could get involved in terms of providing meals, purchasing gift cards for kids so that they can have a meal, purchasing zoo tickets, community activities or become involved with Bags of Love.”
“It’s really important that the rooms are positive and warm and inviting and a positive space where these children and their families can come together,” Boatman said.
The group will meet at the rooms at 2 p.m. Saturday and at noon on Sunday. The volunteer effort won’t be over after this weekend, though. Boatman said they are always looking for volunteers to come in and clean the rooms once a month or once every other month.
