EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - February is the proper time to prune fruit trees. Pruning helps promote large, well-flavored fruit.
Through proper pruning techniques, branches are removed containing some of the fruit buds which would eventually produce mature fruit. As a result of fewer fruit on the tree, all available nutrients are then concentrated to produce larger and juicer fruit.
Another valuable advantage of pruning is to establish a proper tree framework.
A strong framework can support more fruit which should be evenly distributed throughout. This will prevent tree breakage when fruit begins to grow and mature.
