Angelina College head Mark Mattson said he wanted to see his team face some challenges in Friday’s home opener against San Jacinto College.
He got all the challenge he wanted – and then some.
The Lady Roadrunners rallied twice to take an 8-6, 8-4 doubleheader sweep of the Lady Coyotes at the Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex on the AC campus.
The Lady ‘Runners trailed 4-0 through three innings and 6-1 through four innings of the opener before getting in some better swings against San Jac pitching. In the fifth, freshman Kaylee Ancelot sparked the rally with her first collegiate home run, a line-drive, two-run shot over the left field fence. In the sixth inning, AC exploded for five more runs, getting solo homers from Makayla Rodger and Nikki Whitehead to go with RBI from Emilee Cernosek and Brette Kohring. Kohring was 3-for-4 in the game and finished the twin bill with five hits.
Pitcher McKenna Fryar, who entered the game in relief, would shut down the Coyotes over the final two innings to earn the win in the circle.
In the nightcap, the Lady ‘Runners earned an early 3-1 lead with RBIs from Tristin Anders, Cernosek and Kohring in the bottom of the first. San Jac answered with a three-run third to take a 4-3 lead, only for AC to put up three runs in the fourth inning – with Whitehead, Sara Mayes and Jessica Husband driving home the runs – and two more in the fifth behind Mayes’ solo homer and an RBI groundout from Whitehead.
Fryar threw a complete game for her second win of the day.
