NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Families with children were there by ten this morning.

They're receiving free food from the East Texas Food Bank and its Nacogdoches agency, the Harvest House.

Distribution ran like a well-oiled machine.

The massive food distributions have occurred for the first time in several East Texas cities. Thousands are being served in a 26-county region.

"Fourteen thousand families in our total service area so far," said Kirk Goodman, the East Texas Food Band Program service manager.

Boxes of food were stuffed into trunks and carried away in laps.

"They're getting 46 pounds per month for June, July, August and September, so they're actually going to pick up just, almost, 200 pounds of food today," said Norman Edwards, the Harvest House director.

The food giveaway is possible through the summer family nutrition program and a collaboration with the Texas Food Bank Network.

The masses are needing help.

"A lot of that is due to layoffs, changes in jobs and the cost of food is getting astronomical," Norman said.

The East Texas Food Bank and the Harvest House received a pleasant surprise when they set up this food distribution. The Nacogdoches County Exposition Center did not charge them any rental at all.

This provides more funding for mothers with hungry children.

"In my case, I'm not working," Anna Rodas said. "It's only my husband and I have 5 kids. It's hard."

Grandparents serving as guardians need help too.

"It's a really hard time right now," Merlene Tyra said.

"But we'll make it," Rodas said. "Thank God."

The "thank you" lets staff and volunteers know their mission of reducing hunger has been accomplished.
