JASPER, Texas (KTRE) - The Jasper Police Department has filed charges on a Pineland Police officer who they say tried to eat breakfast for free before being arrested for drunk driving.

Thomas Benjamin Wright, 34, of Porter, is charged with driving while intoxicated.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to Econo Lodge, located at 612 West Gibson St., at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, in reference to a man eating the continental breakfast, even though he was not staying at the motel.

When officers questioned Wright, he told them he was a Pineland Police officer then fled the motel, according to the report.

Officers followed Wright in his car and say he sped on South Wheeler Street and could not stay in a single lane. They pulled him over and had him take field sobriety tests, which he failed, according to the report.

The officers arrested Wright on the DWI charge.

The Pineland Police chief was not immediately available for comment.
