Christel Phillips

Christel Phillips joined the KTRE news team in May 2007. Since she has worked several positions including producer, video journalist, and is currently an anchor/producer for the East Texas News at 5 and 6.

Christel is a native Houstonian, but very proud to call East Texas her home. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Houston. During her college career she decided to expand her horizons, so she attended Kukulcan Spanish Immersion School in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Christel also took undergraduate broadcast communications courses at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She has won several awards in public speaking, including becoming a National gold medalist in oratory in the NAACP ACT-SO competition. In 1999, she was the recipient of McDonald's Black History Maker of Tomorrow award. Christel is a volunteer mentor with the HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) Mentoring program at Brandon Elementary.  She volunteers her time with several local organizations.

She has a passion for news.  She began her career at KTRK 13 in Houston, as a production assistant.

She enjoys spending time with her family, and friends, and she admits she is a reality TV show junkie. She loves to meet new people but enjoys hearing the stories of people. With her voice in broadcast she tries to bring about change-- serving as a representative to speak for those that are unable to speak, the voice of Truth.

Christel is a member of Harvest Family Worship Center of East Texas, where she works with the youth department, women's ministry, and the praise and worship team. She is a member of National Association of Black Journalists, and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization.
