Get ready - the Big Switch is coming Friday

By Holley Nees - bio | email

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - KTRE has been broadcasting in digital and analog for more than three years, so you don't have to wait until the last minute to get ready and go digital, but, Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. KTRE will be transitioning to digital and the station will be off the air just for that hour.

The East Texas News wants you to be ready and the first thing you need to know is not everyone will need a converter box for the Big Switch.

"A lot of people coming in, everyday. That's probably our hottest thing is the converter boxes. Everybody wants to be ready," said Best Buy Sales Associate Tommy Butler Jr.

You better be ready for the Big Switch because if you're not, a black screen is all you'll see after Friday.

You're only going to need this converter box if you have an older TV and you receive an analog signal through an antennae. However, if you have cable or satellite, or a newer TV like these with a digital tuner built in, then you're not going to need a converter box and you'll receive the new digital signal just fine.

KTRE has been broadcasting in both digital and analog for more than three years, but Friday, KTRE will no longer broadcast in analog. Everything will go digital.

"If you have rabbit ears, you have fuzzy reception, you probably don't receive us digitally," said KTRE Technical Director Jase Shepherd.

The digital signal is all or nothing. If the channel was fuzzy before the Big Switch you may not get it at all after Friday, but there are perks to going digital.

"Better picture, better quality, better sound, we'll be able to do surround sound for the viewers," Shepherd said.

After 10 a.m. when KTRE has made the switch, you will need to do a re-scan.

"The re-scan involves going into the menu of either your TV or your converter box and selecting the rescan function. It goes through and finds the channels that are available," said Shepherd.

Then, you will be good to go, but remember, if you need a converter box and still haven't bought one there's still time.

"Know that the antennae is important. Honestly, the basic rabbit ears is a good chance that they'll work, but getting an amplified antennae really will give you a lot better chance of getting better reception," Butler said.

So don't wait. Get ready for the big change and an even clearer East Texas News.

If you still have questions, KTRE will have a Big Switch live phone bank on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can call (936) 853-5873 during those hours or after 6 p.m., we have a message line set up. Just dial (936) 853-8633.
