Wal-Mart gang initiation a hoax

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The text messages warning women to stay away from Wal-Mart because three people would be shot in a gang initiation is just a hoax according to the Lufkin Police Department.

The Lufkin Police Department said they would be more concerned if it was specific to Lufkin, but since it has been all over the Internet with reports across the nation, they are not as worried. However, just to be safe, they have stepped up their night patrols at the Lufkin Wal-Mart.

"We received literally hundreds of calls from people concerned about this and it appears to be nothing more than an Internet-type hoax that's been transmitted through text messages and emails. So best we can determine, this is going on nationwide and there's no factual basis to this rumor," Lufkin Police Department Lt. David Young said.

Lt. Young said all the calls do slow down dispatchers from answering 911 calls. However, he understands people are concerned, and he said they do have a right to call in and ask about these things.

The Lufkin Police Deparment does not want people to be scared to go to a store based on a rumor.
