LONDON (AP) - Michelle Obama has left her mark on Buckingham Palace, managing to coax a rare public hug from Queen Elizabeth II.
The 82-year-old monarch broke with protocol during her meeting with the Obamas and put her arm around the first lady. Michelle Obama also embraced the queen in what Buckingham Palace is calling "a mutual and spontaneous display of affection."
It was the first time the two had met. The Daily Mail says the "two women clearly took to each other."
A spokesman for the queen says the palace doesn't "issue instructions on not touching the queen."
The last time the British public was so charmed by a first lady was last year, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, the former fashion model and songwriter Carla Bruni.
Today, London's Times newspaper wrote "Carla who?"
