Pasadena police arrest man accused in Trinity slaying

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Pasadena police last week arrested a man accused of slaying a Trinity man nearly two years ago.

Michael Berber allegedly killed his employer, Mark Haslett, in his residence in July of 2007, according to Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas.

Maskunas said Haslett was found dead in his residence. His throat was cut and he had been stabbed several times. Maskunas said he believes Haslett was killed in a robbery attempt.

A warrant for Berber's arrest was issued in January and he was arrested last week, Maskunas said.

"We knew he frequented Pasadena and the police there were able to catch up with him," Maskunas said. "He was definitely on the run, he knew we were looking for him after we talked to his family and requested he turn himself in."
