Sarver's journey: Jasper native got off to good start in finals

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Michael Sarver got off to a great start in the finals with his rendition of "You Are Not Alone," by Michael Jackson.

Idol showed a package of Sarver returning to Texas, meeting with his oil rig crew and his family.

Sarver began his performance sitting on the stairs before getting up and walking around the stage.

Judge Simon Cowell told Sarver he was not the best singer in the competition, but he made up for it with his passion, soul and heart.

"I just wish we knew what you did with a living," Cowell said jokingly, a reference to the show's constant references to Sarver working on an oil rig.

Randy Jackson told Sarver he was one of the best in the completion.

Kara DioGuardi said he did a great job and Sarver brought "his game."
