LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Texas Department of Transportation is trying to remind drivers that construction zones can be dangerous, if you don't pay attention. Since 1938, there have been 268 TxDOT employees killed in work zones. Since 2007, two people have died out of the 146 work zone crashes in the lufkin district, and 120 people have been injured, 11 of them severely.

A special ceremony was held Tuesday at the district office to remember victims killed and injured in work zones and to raise safety awareness for workers and motorists.

"Mainly, just slow down. Stay off your cell phone, don't be reading magazines, putting on makeup. We have an estimated one out of five drivers are impaired on roads," said Patricia Fears, main supervisor for San Jacinto County.

The Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining nearly 80,000 miles of road. The Lufkin district comprises a nine county area.
