Lufkin man goes missing in Mexico

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A 49-year-old Lufkin man went missing Saturday afternoon while on a fishing trip with friends in Mexico.

Ronald Scheepstra and his four friends were fishing together on the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula in calm, knee-deep water when Scheepstra decided to go to a spot on his own to fish, according to his wife, Cindy.

His friends returned to their American hotel in which they were staying. After Scheepstra had not returned for several hours, the friends decided to look for him, his wife said.

At the location, the friends found his car but he was nowhere to be found.

Cindy Scheepstra said the Mexican government is cooperating with the search and putting forth a great effort.

Scheepstra was wearing a green shirt at the time of his disappearance. He is a diabetic and so family and friends are worried about his blood-sugar levels. He had a little water and food before he disappeared.

Scheepstra works for Larox, a finish company based out of Jessup, MD. His wife said he travels extensively and this was not his first time to be out fishing by himself.
