LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The search continues for a Lufkin man missing in Xcalak, Mexico since Saturday. "We still have hope that he will be found alive," said Cindy Scheepstra, wife of Ronald Scheepstra.
Cindy Scheepstra is talking about her missing husband, Ronald. He went on a yearly fly-fishing trip with four friends from Germany and the Netherlands in a remote city in the southern tip of Mexico. Ronald left the group to fish in a different spot.
"They think they saw some footprints that led away from the water, they haven't found any specific gear, they have not seen any signs of foul play, he's just disappeared," said Reverend Mike Hunter, First Christian Church in Lufkin.
Reverened Hunter has known the Scheepstra's for eight years. He describes Ronald is an outdoor enthusiasts. "He has traveled and been a sportman around the world," said Hunter. "This is not his first time to be in a remote location."
"He has fly-fished literally all over the world and is an outdoorsman and very intelligent and level-headed man," said Cidny Scheepstra.
Cindy said she has been in constant contact with several agencies and feels optimistic about the search thus far. "The residents of the small fishing village are all looking as well, so far nothing has been found," said Cidny Scheepstra.
KTRE spoke to Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert and tells us the U.S. Department, U.S. Consulate and the Mexican Federal Police are being very helpful. Gohmert said if he finds that enough is not being done to find Scheepstra, he will personally travel to Mexico.
Ronald's wife, Cidny, is leaving for Mexico on Thursday to aide in the search for her husband. She says she's thankful for everyone's thoughts and prayers.
