LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Police said they do know the cause of death, but they will not release that information as of Thursday because it could jeopardize the investigation.   A case that has now been ruled a murder.

Police started their investigation when they were called out to the 900 block of Cain Street Wednesday at 2 a.m.   Jernigan was pronounced dead at the scene.   Police are trying to retrace his last steps.   They are working on a timeline of where he was the day before the murder and where he may have been going that night.

"We do know how he was killed now, but we aren't releasing that information.  There's a lot of rumor on the street right now about how it happened and keeping that close to our vest right now is helping us filter out some of the rumor from the people that have good information," Lufkin Police Department Lt. David Young said.

He said detectives do have some very good leads they are following up on.   The family said Wednesday they are confident justice will come.

Although they do have more answers, the police said no arrests have been made.

Police are urging anyone with information that might help them track Jernigan's killer to contact them.   Just call 633-0356, or, if you don't want to give your name call Crimestoppers at 639-tips.
