Grand jury returns indictment in Trinity County stabbing death

GROVETON, TX (KTRE) - A Trinity County grand jury has indicted Michael Berber for murder.  Berber allegedly stabbed his employer, Mark Haskett, in his residence in July of 2007.

In a previous report, Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas said he believed Haslett was killed in a robbery attempt.  His body was found in his residence.  His throat had been cut and he had several stab wounds.

A warrant for Berber's arrest was issued in January.  He was arrested two weeks ago in Pasadena.  Police knew he frequented Pasadena, they spoke to his family and asked Berber to turn himself in.

Trinity County District Attorney Joe Ned Dean said a trial date for Berber will be set at his arraignment, which is expected to be in one to two weeks.  Berber faces a maximum sentence of 99 years.
