First swine flu death in the U.S.

HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston hospital has confirmed it had been treating a Mexico City toddler who is the first confirmed death in the U.S. from swine flu.

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston said in a statement Wednesday that it had been treating the boy, who died there Monday night.

The boy, who was nearly 2 years old, had traveled from MexicoCity to Matamoros, Mexico, then to Brownsville, Texas, with family to visit relatives. He arrived with "underlying health issues" April 4 and developed flu symptoms four days later, the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

He was hospitalized April 13 and transferred the following day to Texas Children's.

Texas Children's says the boy did not come in contact with other patients at the hospital and all appropriate infection control measures were taken by medical personnel.
