Kids cast their line in hopes of reeling in a big catch

CASSELS-BOYKIN, TX (KTRE) - Ten-year-old Hunter Curry's fishing technique worked out for him at Saturday's Kid Fish Tournament. "Cast it out there, rehash it and then jerk," said Curry.

As he reeled in a two ounce fish, Hunter could not help but crack a smile. He lives on Lake Sam Rayburn with his grandparents. He's been fishing his whole life. "As soon as he gets in from school that's his goal," said Mary Curry, Hunter's grandmother.

Once his line hit the water at Saturday's tournament, his grandmother cheered him on for a big catch. "Come on Hunter, catch something, get a big one bud," said Mary. Hunter said his goal is to catch the biggest and most fish.

The Kid Fish Tournament would not be possible without the influence of the late Dr.. Shelton. "His passion was fishing, and when it came to kids his passion was teaching them how enjoy it," said Patricia Jones, Director of Community Base Care at Memorial Hospital.

Saturday's tournament was about sportsmanship and experiencing the great outdoors of East Texas. "Even though I'm not catching fish, I'm still having fun," said Hunter.

Dr. Shelton worked for years in the cancer center at Memorial Hospital. The proceeds from Saturday's tournament will benefit cancer patients at the Arthur Temple Senior Regional Cancer Center.
