East Texas students pledge to be drug free

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Fifth grade students from Slack, Brandon, Temple Inland, Brook Hollow, and Coston Elementary Schools graduated Wednesday from the D.A.R.E. program.

Proud parents watched as their kids read essays they had written and pledged to be drug free.

The Crimestoppers Band was even on hand to provide entertainment for the kids.

The program has been going strong for 19 years because one officer said it gives kids information that they need.

"Students see a lot of bad influences in their lives.  From things from television and just things they've been exposed to, so having some positives in front of them is always a good thing,"said Lufkin Independent School District D.A.R.E. Officer Ben Vaughan.

Students stayed pretty loud through the ceremony as they chanted for their classmates.
