NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Appliance shoppers looking to save money at the cash register and on their utility bills need to look for this emblem. The Energy Star indicates the appliance uses 10 to 50% less energy and water than standard models. Buy them this weekend and you won't have to pay state and local taxes. "Tax free weekend is going to include energy star appliances. Washers, dishwashers, refrigerators under $2,000," explained Kay Sumerford, a Sears store owner. Ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, light bulbs and programmable thermostats are on the list too.
New energy efficient designs come out every year, especially on freezers and refrigerators. "They've redesigned compressors in the whole system on them these days, so they do run a lot more efficiency," said Sumerford. "You are going to see a drop in your utility bills."
The same holds true for central air and heat. The EPA is phasing out old refrigerants this year. "According to what the EPA says, it's ozone friendly," said Leo Castleberry, owner of Nacogdoches Air Conditioning.
This weekend provides the opportunity to upgrade to your house, to pare down that high summer bill. Qualified buyers can also look forward to a future income tax credit. "The government is giving a tax credit for people who qualify to get a new system. You actually get a tax credit," reminded Castleberry.
