LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Many East Texans spent the memorial day weekend with close friends and family, paying respect to the Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Lufkin Departmenet of Public Safety said the holiday weekend was unusually quiet. Traffic was not as heavy, in fact they said the streets remained calm and fortunately, there were no fatal car accidents.

"I think a lot of people were staying at home more, cooking out, things of that nature," said Greg Sanches, Lufkin DPS spokesperson.

Sanches said on holiday weekends, there are always more officers patrolling the streets. He said this Memorial Day weekend was one of the calmest and hopes this past weekend will become a quiet trend for years to come.
