TYLER, TX (KLTV) - You can now get more detailed information, even email updates about registered sex offenders in your area. The Texas Department of Public Safety spent more than $1,000,000 enhancing their sex offender registry.
It is easy to subscribe to the site. We found that one of the biggest improvements to the web site was the way it updates your family to keep them safe. With the added features, you will not need to go searching through lists of offenders in your area because updates will automatically come straight to you through your email inbox. After you sign up and get a free account you can then click on the new email feature on the right. Just create a subscription and you're on your way.
You'll get an email anytime a registered sex offender moves into your zip code or within five miles of your address. You can also look up where registered offender's work, and even if they have out-of-state offenses on their record.
"That's a great deal," said Robin Strait, a mother. "That's good. That's good because I would like to know."
Like others, Robin Strait and Nell Powell have checked the registry before, and it opened their eyes to potential dangers.
"It is alarming to think that there's predators in your area," said Strait.
"So many times these predators are all around us," said Powell.
Now, the information at your fingertips is really getting advanced. Enhanced mapping allows you to search by name, address, zip code, county and see descriptions. Strait and Powell say it's money well spent and something they'll definitely take advantage of.
"So I can protect my children," said Strait. "I have to make sure that they're safe."
And, of course, the risk level of each registered offender is listed as well. They can range from low to moderate to high risk, depending on the crime.
If you'd like to visit the site yourself and sign up for notifications just go to the homepage and click on the Big Red Box. Look for the link, Sex Offender Registry.
There you'll be able to search for sex offenders in your neighborhood as well as sign up for those emails.
