LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Organizers in Lufkin, Nacogdoches and San Augustine are busy carrying out plans for Juneteenth celebrations Friday and Saturday.
In Lufkin, festivities began at Brandon Park on Keltys Street. Parade participants, including horseback riders, bicyclists, drivers in custom cars and trucks lined up at Brandon Park beginning at 9 a.m. Parade began at 10 a.m. down Keltys to Abney, left on Abney to Martin Luther King Drive, left to Kurth Drive to Culverhouse, left on Culverhouse, right on Wilson to Keltys and back to Brandon Park.
Afternoon activities included entertainment in the park, music, Deejay Big Al Flemming, basketball, other games, talent show.
At 1 p.m. a program with guest speaker Joe Deason will be held.
Dinner will be served (BBQ, watermelon, red soda, desserts) beginning at about 2 p.m.
Also in Lufkin, Parkwood Place will hold a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will have a waterslide, cookout and DJ.
In Nacogdoches on Saturday, a parade will take place at 11 a.m. through downtown and a festival will follow afterward at EJ Campbell Field.
In San Augustine on Saturday, a celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Taylor Tabernacle with a program of history, various activities and lunch.
