LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Doyle Eugene Wright, a 37-year-old Lufkin man, was shot in the chest by 38-year-old Daniel Ray Hartman, Jr., also of Lufkin around 12 a.m. Sunday morning.

Wright was visiting his ex-girlfriend on Moore Street in Lufkin, according to Lufkin Police.  Hartman, the new boyfriend, told police he fired his .22 pistol at Wright after Wright broke the glass of his truck window and began repeatedly punching Hartman in the face.

Wright drove himself to Memorial Medical Center where Sunday evening he was listed in stable condition.

Hartman told police he did shoot Wright with his pistol.  Police said Hartman cooperated as they took him into custody.  Hartman was booked into the Angelina County Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

His bond has not been set as of Sunday afternoon.  Police said the case still is an active investigation and they will take it before a grand jury.
