NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Friends and neighbors of Nickevette Carey said they're shaken-up and still in disbelief.

"It was shocking," said Simone Waters, friend of Nickevette Carey.

Simone Waters grew up with Nickevette Carey on a neighborhood street in Nacogdoches. She still can't shake off the thought her friend is accused of killing Michael Motte.

"I didn't think he would do anything like that," said Waters. "I really didn't." Waters went to high school with Carey. "He wasn't the fighting type in school."

"I know his mother and them taught him better than that," said Linda Garrett, neighbor of Nickevette Carey.

From then to now...friends said they don't know what went wrong. "I think he did start hanging out at the end with the wrong crowd and things didn't go right and it led to that," said Waters.

"He might have just got in the wrong crowd and they plotted up the wrong thing," said Garrett.

Now Carey, 20, is behind bars, charged with capital murder. "He's a young kid at that, he got a lot ahead of his life, for the future and now...where he's heading now....there's nothing he can do about it," said Garrett.

Garrett said it's a harsh reality. "You done the crime, you got to do the time," said Garrett.

Despite the criminal charges Carey faces, friends still remember the Nickevette Carey they grew up with.

"He's a good person, he really is," said Waters.

"I just hope the best for him, I hope he can be a stronger man and can survive and do his time," said Garrett.

Carey was arrested in Shelby County and returned to Nacogdoches about five hours after the shooting occurred. As of right now he remains in jail without bond. He is charged with capital murder. If convicted, Carey faces a life or death sentence.

Nacogdoches Police said they're working day and night to piece together the murder of Michael Motte.

Assistant police chief Mike Kelly said the investigation is still in its early stage. Nacogdoches District Attorney Nicole Lostracco said she expects this murder case to be a long investigation.

At this time, she said it appears the capital murder charge will stick with Nickevette Carey. But as always that could change as the investigation unravels.
