LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - America traditionally celebrates its birthday with flags, fireworks, parades and barbecues, but how many kids know the true meaning behind Independence Day? KTRE asked children if they knew why we celebrated the Fourth of July.
"No," said one little girl as she scratched her head.
"Because it's summer," said another young girl.
One young boy told us "For Independence Day."
Another kid explained we celebrate, "For Fun," and one little boy said we shoot fireworks "because God makes them."
In case you're not quite sure, the Fourth of July is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
