Security high as New Year celebrations get under way

Auckland, New Zealand-AP -- One of the first nations to see in the New Year is celebrating peacefully.

In New Zealand's biggest city, fireworks erupted on the stroke of midnight while crowds cheered.

Elsewhere across the world, security is tight amid fears of possible terrorist attacks as people ring in 2003.

Police have closed downtown Sydney, Australia to traffic as about a (m) million people pack the harbor for a fireworks show. Pakistan's most populated city -- Karachi -- is banning parties in hotels out of respect for Islamic guidelines.

In what's seen as a defiant gesture against terrorism, Indonesia's president will lead national celebrations in Bali, not far from the site of a nightclub bombing that killed nearly 200 people.

More than 200-thousand security officers will be on duty across Indonesia, the world's most populous Islamic nation.
