Police investigating apparent murder-suicide in Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide on Village Gate Circle which occurred early Thursday morning.

According to police spokesman Sgt. Greg Sowell, Carlton Wayne Edwards, 52, apparently shot his wife, Donnie Mae Edwards, 46, twice before turning the gun on himself around 1:30 a.m.

Sowell said a handgun was lying next to the husband and all indications point to a murder-suicide.

The couple's two daughters, aged 8 and 14, were at the home at the time of the incident but Sowell said he did not think they witnessed the deaths.

Carlton Edwards' father, Carl Edwards of Longview, said his son was taking pain and depression medication and he routinely drank.

The Edwards are SFA alum and were married on Christmas Day 29 years ago. They had recently moved back to Nacogdoches after selling a home in Mississippi.

Carl Edwards said the couple was experiencing financial difficulties.

"I'm afraid you're going to see more of this kind of thing as the economy worsens," Carl Edwards said.

A bio released by Aramark stated Donnie Edwards had worked for the company since 2008 and that she was "known for her public speaking ability and loves speaking at national meetings to motivate others."

According to the bio, the couple also had a 23-year-old daughter.
