Freedom Fighters: James Golden

By Joan Hallmark - bio | email

CHANDLER, TX (KLTV) - James Golden joined the Marine Corps in 1951 at the age of 17. By the time he was 18 he was on his way to Korea where he found the country literally destroyed by the North Korean Army. Golden's first Christmas was a lonely one until he gave away his rations and presents from home to the homeless children who gathered daily at the base gate.

But, Golden and his Marine buddies, most still in their teens, were kids themselves. Many of them never returned home. Golden laments that their lives were cut short.

Golden served in the Marine Corps five years, returning home in 1956 to complete college and become a prominent educator. His book "Traveling Down Golden Road" tells of growing up in East Texas, his time in Korea and of later years. The book can be secured by donations applied to a scholarship fund for worthy students.
