Brewer Trial Begins

On September 13, 1999, the capitol murder trial of Lawrence Russell Brewer began in Bryan, TX.

The prosecution started out by describing James Byrd Jr's body parts being scattered down a country road. Lead prosecutor Guy James Gray told jurors that it is not illegal to hate someone and it is not illegal to preach hatred, but it is illegal to act on that racial hatred. Prosecution is focusing on establishing the motive of the crime, including Brewer's ties to the Ku Klux Klan, an oath he signed in blood in April of 1995.

Family members say they were not prepared for the new evidence they heard. The new information was not introduced in William King's trial because there was so much information.
