On September 23, 1999, only 2 days and 14 hours after the guilty verdict, Lawrence Russell Brewer was sentenced to death.
As the verdict was read, there was no visible reaction from Brewer in the courtroom. Brewer's attorney, Doug Barlow said his client had prepared himself for the possibility of receiving the death sentence.
Earlier that day, the jury had asked State District Judge Monte Lawlis what would happen if they could not reach a verdict. The judge ordered the jury to continue deliberating, and denied a defense motion for a life sentence.
Prosecutor Guy James Gray said that even though he is not an advocate of the death penalty, it was a necessary decision in Brewer's case.
