Berry Guilty Verdict & Life Sentence

On November 18, 1999, just 8 days after the trial began, Shawn Allen Berry stood still in the deathly silent courtroom as Judge Joe Bob Golden read the final guilty verdict of the James Byrd Jr. capitol murder trials.

It took the jury nearly 11 hours to agree on a guilty verdict; hardly comparable to the amount of time it took them to reach a punishment. The jury came back in only 1 hour with the decision. Berry would spend life in prison.
