Grand jury chooses not to indict Alto coach

By Jeff Awtrey - email

RUSK, TX (KTRE) - A Cherokee County Grand Jury chose not to indict an Alto football coach on allegations of tampering with a witness, according to a representative of the district attorney's office.

John Paul Dixon's case went before a grand jury on July 27, according to Assistant District Attorney Gordon LeMaire.

A Cherokee County Grand Jury indicted Dixon's son, Paul Dixon, who was also an assistant coach with Alto ISD, on charges of an improper relationship with a student. Paul Dixon resigned in March amid the allegations while John Paul Dixon was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

A lawyer for the school district, Wayne Haglund, said he could not comment on John Paul Dixon's future until he met with school officials.

Calls to the Alto ISD superintendent were not immediately returned.
