LONGVIEW, TX - It's the new sex offender locator app that has East Texas grandparents like Ben Leonard stunned.
"Then we scroll down and then there's more and more," said Leonard, looking at the app. "This is astounding. There are a lot of people in here."
The app shows pages of registered sex offenders from all 50 states.
"You have people who are vile creatures that don't need to be in public," said Leonard. "I don't want my children approached by anybody whose going to abuse them."
Users can search three ways. You can search near your current location or search by putting in an address. You can also search the addresses of your contacts to see if sex offenders live in their neighborhood.
"I think it would be great," said Brandon Still of White Oak. "This is my oldest son. I have a younger son there. It's just good to know where they're at. In my neighborhood, or how close they would be to my house where my kids play at."
The Offender Locator app shows you the registered sex offender's name, address, and it shows one or more offenders on a map. On top of that, it also shows you there picture and their offense.
"And, this was sexual assault of a child and that's an individual that I really would not want to have around," said Leonard.
We showed the app to Texas DPS law enforcement and they warn users to be cautious.
"Verify your information and try to get it from as credible as source as you can," said Trooper Jeanne Dark. "While all of these different systems are in place to aid in that. Primarily the ultimate responsibly lies upon the parent to insure the child's safety."
Good advice for parents.
"The freedom we had when I was back in the 50's is gone," said Leonard. "That country doesn't exist anymore."
