Freedom Fighters: Billy Mosley

By Joan Hallmark - bio | email

TYLEr, TX (KLTV) - It's been 65 years since Billy Mosley was an ordinance expert in the South Pacific during World War II. From Guam to Luzon, Mosley defused highly explosive bombs in a job where one mistake would have been his last.

In Tinenen, he spent weeks guarding a mysterious group of bombs that were destined to hasten the end of the war. It wasn't until the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945 that Mosley realized what he had been guarding.

On Luzon, Mosley and his ordinance group had to defuse 120 highly explosive bombs that had been hidden since the Americans had been driven fro the island early in the war. He says that was probably his most dangerous assignment. In spite of the danger of his work, Mosley got through the war unharmed, only to spend the years until his retirement in the often dangerous job of fighting fires for the Tyler Fire Department.
