LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - With the nation's housing market in turmoil, the Parade of Homes couldn't come at a more perfect time. Homebuilders tell us they're hoping to stack plenty of contracts this weekend.
Homebuilder Dan Barringer put the final touches on one of his homes located in the Village of Saddle Brook neighborhood on Friday. He said the housing market is in dire need of a boost.
"If the housing market doesn't pick-up and doesn't succeed, the economy will not recover, it may recover at some point, but it will be very slow," Barringer said.
He said in today's market, more people are looking to downsize. This year's Parade of Homes is trying to reach that trend. "They're looking for smaller homes, less upkeep," Barringer said.
"Definitely more practical and leaning towards more efficient," said Mike Hineman, owner of Dream Homes and Drafting LLC.
Hineman said the Parade of Homes allows potential buyers to view the homes deisigned by several differnent homebuilders in the area.
"The new homes that we have, they're more energy efficient, that's becoming a key," Hineman said.
Hineman said he's ready to hand over the keys to new homeowners. "The opportunity for growth and growth for the Lufkin area is definitely there," he said.
"Work will pick up and then it will slow down again, but it's on the upside," Barringer said. "It's actually better than it has been."
Barringer said in difficult times, he finds it especially fitting to hold on to optimism. "I guess the best thing that could come out of the Parade of Homes is hope," he said. "Hope that there is a change in the horizon, something different than what we've got right now."
He's looking up and hopes potential buyers take notice.
The Parade of Homes begins 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For locations of the Parade of Homes click here.
