LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A local woman was in need of help after Hurricane Ike damaged her roof and some East Texans came to her rescue.

The volunteers said she needs a new ceiling, a new roof, and she has had no running water for several months. One volunteer said she applied for FEMA help, was denied, appealed it, and was denied again.

"I was 90 years old in April and I still love to help people as much as I can and I think this lady that lives here is in dire need of help," said volunteer Lois Hurd.

"We're just a group of volunteers," said East Texas Disaster Services Director Donn Turner.  "I mean we do volunteer disaster work. I mean, to have somebody live like this, I understand people fall through the cracks of FEMA all the time, but this it just tugs on your heart."

He said they need people to help in any way they can, whether it's volunteering labor or materials, they'll take it.
