As a fighter pilot, Vern Covault flew close to two hundred combat missions during World War Two, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. A Silver Star, Bronze Star, Two Distinguishec Flying Crosses and fifteen Air Medals only begin to tell the story of Covault's service to our country.

As Covault puts it, he was "shot at, shot up, but never shot down". However, there were dozens of close calls in his 63 missions during World War Two and 130 missions in Vietnam. During the Korean War, Covault had volunteered for combat but was needed to train pilots for combat. Vern Covault retired from the Air Force as a Colonel after thirty years of service.
