LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It's back to school for students and teachers.

Over 600 Lufkin ISD teachers were at the civic center Friday morning for their opening assembly to get fired up about the upcoming school year.

The sea of purple applauded as some of their fellow teachers were recognized and one of their young students sang for them.

"All the teachers are excited to be back and to see all of the new faces and exciting faces and we're there for our kids and we want to do the best we can for them for their school year and we're just looking forward to seeing all of them on Monday," said Lufkin Middle School Teacher Alys Ray.

Lufkin ISD Superintendent Roy Knight showed the teachers the district's improved TAKS scores and Ray said Lufkin should be proud of their panthers.
