Police investigate wooden club vs. bat fight

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – An adult man is in the hospital with a ruptured spleen following a wreck and a baseball bat beating on Abney Street in Lufkin.

Police are not sure if the injuries were a result of the wreck or the ball bat beating. And despite being laid up in a hospital right now, he is likely the one going to jail.

A Lufkin Police report states the man was involved in a one-car wreck on Abney Street. When a 14-year-old boy went to check on him, the man yelled a racial slur at him. The boy decided to walk away when the man reached into his car, pulled out a wooden club, and chased him home.

When the boy got home, someone handed him a baseball bat, which he used to defend himself against the man, the report stated.

The boy received minor injuries from being hit in the ribs with the club. The man was transported to a Houston-area hospital for treatment of injuries (either from the wreck or the baseball bat).

Charges against the man are pending his release from the hospital.

Lt. David Young said no charges will be filed against the boy as he was only defending himself.
