SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) – San Augustine deputies tracked down a Friday morning escapee around 11:30 a.m., the sheriff said.

Sheriff David Smith said a train operator called the sheriff's office and let them know a man with stripes was wandering by the tracks about eight miles south of San Augustine.

Deputies arrested William Martin Harris, 19, without incident.

Harris, previously a trusty in the San Augustine County Jail simply walked off the grounds Friday morning, and law enforcement had put out a search for him, the sheriff said.

Sheriff David Smith said William Martin Harris was on work detail and walked out of the sheriff's office.

Smith said they found his shirt and socks away from the prison grounds.

Harris was one month into a one-year sentence for a burglary of a habitation conviction.

Smith said he did not consider Harris to be a harmful threat.

"We made him a trusty because he was a real good trustee last time he served here," Smith said.
