TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Vernon Dunn was 18 when he joined the Navy one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The U.S.S. Pennsylvania, which took a 500 pound bomb hit at Pearl Harbor, was to be the ship on which Dunn was to serve during World War Two.

After the Pennsylvania was repaired from the bomb damage it took part in thirteen amphibious operations in the Aleutians and South Pacific, gaining the title of "the shootingist ship in the war". Just two days before the end of the war, a Japanese torpedo plane made a direct hit on the Pennsylvania, killing 20 sailors aboard and ending the ship's wartime service.
