LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Panthers, coming off a big win over rival the Longview Lobos can add another accolate to their bag this week, the Pack has been named the Army Strong Team of the Week for Division 5A by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.
According to to a news release, the Panthers were chosen for this honor because of their teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage and integrity, values shared by U.S. Army Soldiers.
"Lufkin bounced back from an early-season loss to top 4A's number one team, the Longview Lobos, 28-14 in week four. Lufkin scored all 28 of its points in the first half, and the final 14 came with just minutes left to play in the second quarter. After that point, the defense took over, and Longview was never able to claw within true striking distance," said Adam Hochfelder, general manager of Dave Campbell's Texas Football.
The award will be presented to the team at a time to be determined later this week by a representative of the U.S. Army.
"The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Lufkin High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by its Soldiers. Student-athletes and Soldiers share similar values, but more importantly they must be mentally, emotionally and physically strong," said Captain David Humphreys. "We expect to see some of these young men competing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the college level, or maybe even professionally in the future."
The Panthers play on Saturday this week, at home at Abe Martin Stadium against Mesquite. Kickoff is at 2.
