Proud Of East Texas: Tara Vineyard & Winery

By Joan Hallmark joanhallmark@kltv.com

Tara Vineyard and Winery is a longtime dream of its owner Patrick Pierce. Tara, located near Athens, joins wineries in Tyler, Pittsburg, and Palestine as part of a fast growng East Texas wine industry. Pierce says "if you can grow a rose, you can grow a grape", and he's encouraging East Texans with farm land to get in on the action. Pierce says vineyards and wineries invigorate the economy, as well as attract tourists.

Tara's patio and tasting room are open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays. A historic bed and breakfast inn, once the Athens town home of oilman Clint Murchison, beacons the tourist trade, along with the winery.

You can check out Tara's website in the Big Red Box on the homepage for current info on live music, dining and special events.

The Community Food Drive in Lufkin is special to some because of the large amount of people it brings together from all walks of life.  "It's just like so many different people, very diverse," said volunteer, Priscilla Gonzalez. "It's just kind of cool to see all these people coming together to do one thing." For others, like Keith Kennedy, it's all about the service being provided to the greater community. "They're in miracle territory,...More >>
